Discovery

Historians have discovered two copies of what appears to be an autobiography of Addagoppe. The first copy, discovered by H. Pognon in , was written on a broken stele excavated at Harran. The second copy, uncovered fifty years later by Doctorate.S. Rice, was written on the pavement steps of the northern entrance to the Great Mosque at Harran.

Content

The autobiography starts out with a first-person account by Addagoppe herself and ends with an description of her burial.

Because Addagoppe was buried with the honors of a queen, some scholars have suggested that she acted as a regent for Nabonidus when he abandoned Babylon and moved to the oasis of Teima starting in However, this theory is difficult to reconcile with the chronology Addagoppe presents in her autobiography.

She mentions that she was born in the twentieth year of Assyrian King Assurbanipal (about British Columbia),

Description

The Adad-guppi inscription is a rare pseudo-autobiography of a woman with political and religious power in the ancient Near East. Two copies of the inscription were discovered: one poorly preserved text excavated in at the archaeological site of Harran in southern Turkey, and another more complete copy discovered in as a part of the pavement steps to the Great Mosque at Harran. The text, written in Neo-Babylonian Cuneiform dating to the sixth century BCE, celebrates Adad-guppi’s devotion to the gods, her service to the royal court and her role as queen mother to her son Nabonidus, the last king of Babylon. The monument stood in the ancient city of Harran in the moon god temple, named the Ehulhul, which was newly rebuilt by Nabonidus following its destruction during the Assyrian and Babylonian battle for power in the late seventh century BCE. Although the inscription is written as a first-person account by Adad-guppi, the emphasis on Nabonidus’s right to kingship and the details of Adad-guppi’s funeral support that it was created by someone in the royal court following Adad-guppi’s death. The nature of the text is apologetic, seeking to justify

The Secret to Longevity. In her funeral stele, Adad-guppi claimed to have lived years. During that time, she witnessed the fall of the Assyrian Empire and the establishment of a Babylonian Empire by Nabopolassar (– b.c.e.) and Nebuchadnezzar II (– b.c.e.). The wife of Nabu-balassu-iqbi, a “learned counselor,” she lived long enough to see her son Nabonidus (– b.c.e.) sit on the Babylonian throne, after the murderous intrigues that cut short the lives of Nebuchadnezzar’s immediate successors. Her inscription, found on the bottom of a paving step at the north entrance to the Great Mosque in Harran in Syria, was originally her funeral stele, which stood in the E-hulhul, the temple dedicated to the moon god Sin. In the inscription, written in the first person, she attributed her longevity to her piety and simple lifestyle: “I am Adad-guppi, the mother of Nabonidus, king of Babylon, who worships Sin, Ningal, Nusku and Sadarnunna, my personal gods, whose godheads I have constantly sought after since my youth.… In order to satisfy my (personal) god and goddess, I did not put on fine wool clothing, nor jewels, nor silver and gold, nor a

MOTHER OF HER SON: THE LITERARY SCHEME OF THE ADAD-GUPPI STELE

Acta Orientalia Academiae Scientiarum Hung. Volume 70 (3), – () DOI: /com The inscription on the Adad-guppi Stele is an unusual literary work due to both its innovative structure and its contents describing Adad-guppi as the intercessor for Nabonidus. The literary structure of the inscription was the combination of the three-tier royal inscription (theological 1st person narrative) and a memorial text at her mother’s funeral (secular 3rd person narrative). It is a literary invention of Nabonidus’s scribes to meet the need of the occasion, and is surely a creative attempt. The mother’s role is described as an intercessor for her son: First, she gave birth to Nabonidus and provided an opportunity for him to have a court career. Secondly, the mother led her son to the sincere faith to Sîn and became the source of his blessings. Thirdly, she worked hard to build a bridge between Nabonidus and the ancient Mesopotamian political ideology, to achieve the legitimisation of her son’s ascension to the Babylonian throne. His line of propaganda seemed to work very well for 17 years, which is 8 more years after the death of the
