Double Olympic Champion to have hip surgery today
The racing season of Alistair Brownlee is over. Having not raced since his victory at the World Triathlon Series Leeds in June, on Friday evening the two-time Olympic Champion confirmed that today (Saturday), he would be undergoing surgery to resolve a chronic hip problem.
It has been a limited (but successful) season so far, with wins at Challenge Gran Canaria, IRONMAN St. George and Leeds with just one misfire/DNF at The Championship in Samorin.
Best wishes to Alistair and lets hope we see him back to full strength in

Alistair Brownlee: Injury update, going into print and Badlands
was not a normal year for Alistair Brownlee, but he will emerge from it refreshed and ready to compete at the highest level again.
The two-time Olympic champion saw his attempt to bid for a threepeat in Tokyo ruined by an ankle injury which required surgery over the summer.
Once the disappointment of WTCS Leeds was in the rear view mirror, and the surgery was done, Alistair was able to concentrate not only on rehab but a few other pursuits outside triathlon.
Among other things, he penned a new book and took on some sporting challenges too notably Spains iconic Badlands gravel race.
This week, as the end of approaches, he sat down with TRI to talk about his year. First of all he provided an update on his recovery from that ankle surgery.
Brownlee injury update
He told us: That was late June, early July and the timeframe was I had two or three weeks of being fully unable to do anything. The foot was in plaster and I was on crutches so that was a relaxing few weeks at home. And then slowly starting building up and rehabbing the training after that.

Alistair Brownlee strikes gold on gravel return and says felt so good to be back amongst it
Alistair Brownlee was on the top step of a podium once again on Sunday when he took the overall victory at the three-day Raiders Gravel event at Gatehouse of Fleet in the south west of Scotland.
Injury has meant the two-time Olympic champions only major triathlon race this season has been the PTO European Open in Ibiza in May, where he finished sixth.
But he underwent successful surgery on his right ankle in July, saying afterwards: “It’s also a big relief that we’ve successfully removed something that has caused me so many issues.
Its clear Alistairs bike legs are in decent shape judged on a dominant performance on the gravel against what was mostly a British field in Dumfries and Galloway.
How the race panned out
He was in control from the outset after crossing the line in on day one, exactly five minutes ahead of runner-up Mikey Mottram.
He took another 32 seconds out of him on what was a similar second day with Brownlee, Mottram, and Lawrence Carpenter once again getting away very early on, though this time they were joined by Mottram’s Ribble
It was an all-Olympian podium in the mens race today at T Lake Las Vegas (as it was in the womens race earlier), but the biggest news of the day was that Marten Van Riel was finally beaten in a long-distance race. After winning his first four races, then taking the wins in his first two T races in San Francisco and Ibiza, someone was finally able to get across a finish line ahead of the Belgian his countryman Jelle Geens. While Geens and Van Riel were both in Paris, third place went to a Tokyo Olympian, Germanys Justus Nieschlag.

Another drafting penalty for Brownlee
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Alistair Brownlee has had a rough between injuries and tough race days. At T Ibiza he appeared to be getting things back on track, only to get the first T drafting penalty ever handed out. After coming out of the water with the lead group, then pushing to the front of the race behind Van Riel, Brownlee was given another drafting penalty today early on in the bike, effectively ending his day. (He would try to get back into the mix on the bike, but eventually pulled out of the race.)
