Almost nothing is known about the life of Bartolomeu de Novaes Dias before , except that he was at the court of João II, king of Portugal (), and was a superintendent of the royal warehouses. He likely had much more sailing experience than his one recorded stint aboard the warship São Cristóvão. Dias was probably in his mid- to late 30s in when João appointed him to head an expedition in search of a sea route to India.

Bartolomeu Dias nasceu por volta de , possivelmente na cidade de Mirandela, localizada na região portuguesa de Trás-os-Montes. Estudou Astronomia e Matemática na Universidade de Lisboa.
Foi escudeiro da Casa Real, administrador do Armazém da Guiné, serviu na fortaleza de São Jorge da Mina, e foi um marinheiro e militar muito experiente. Seu irmão também foi um importante navegador português: Diogo Dias.
Chegou a casar-se e teve dois filhos. Quando era escudeiro de Dom João II, o rei indicou ele para realizar uma viagem nas caravelas, com o intuito de chegar ao Oriente.
Em , comandou uma das caravelas da frota de Pedro Álvares Cabral, o conquistador que viria a descobrir as terras pertencentes ao Brasil.
