While there is very little information to be found about Henry Blair online, his story is more than worth spotlighting. Because, thanks to Henry Blair, the agricultural industry saw one of the earliest forms of revolutionary technology to change farming practices in the early 19th century.
Born in Glen Ross, Maryland in , Henry Blair became an independent farmer with his own plot of land, which motivated him to find ways in making his work, and the work of other farmers more efficient and less labor-intensive. Henry Blair was the second Black inventor issued a patentby the United States Patent Office. Born in in Glen Ross, Maryland, Blair was a free man, his first invention was a seed planter which enabled farmers to plant more corn utilizing less labor in a smaller period of time. He received a patent for this invention on October 14, , assigned number x. Two years later, in , Blair received a second patent for a cotton planter, assigned number The cotton planter worked by splitting the ground with two shovel-like blades pulled along by a horse, followed by awheel-driven cylinder which dropped seen into the newly plowed furrow. Blair had been a successful farmer for years and developed the inventions as a means of increasing efficiency in farming.
It is noteworthy that in both of his patents he was listed as a “colored man”, the only example of an inventor’s race being listed or acknowledged on an issued patent.
Henry Blair was the second African American to receive a patent on his invention. Blair, who was born in , received his first patent on October 14, for his invention of the corn seed planter. It allowed the farmers to plant their corn much faster, and with much less labor. The machine also helped with weed control.
Little is known of the life of Henry Blair, except that he was probably a free farmer of Montgomery County, Maryland. it is assumed he was a free man since the patent would not have been approved to be in the name of a slave. Only the second African American to receive a patent, he was a forerunner of a long line of future black inventors. His invention, a corn-planting machine, was able to seed corn in a checkerboard fashion, a system which provided good weed control.
Henry Blair was the only inventor to be identified in the Patent Office records as "a colored man." Uneducated, and unable to read or write, Henry Blair had a gift for invention and did not allow his race, lack of education or other negative factors of the time hold him back.
