6 Amazing Biography Book Series Teachers and Students will Love

I love having my students read biographies.  Not only does this expose them to a new genre of writing, but there is quite often a great social studies or history connection too!  And . . . if that wasn&#;t enough, there are so many amazing people that can inspire our students to do anything, go anywhere, be all they can dream of being!  I&#;m excited to share some of my favorite biographies for elementary students and activities we use when studying this genre.

Amazing Biographies for Kids

Over the years I&#;ve seen lots and lots of biographies.  Here are my absolute favorites that are not only well written but have been loved by elementary students too!

1. Ordinary People Change the World by Brad Meltzer

Brad Meltzer is a biography genius when it comes to writing for kids!  Not only are his books great for learning about the lives of some amazing people, but his format is so engaging.  This biography series, Ordinary People Change the World, is top-notch! 7 Helpful Tips for Biography Projects & Biography Graphic Organizers

Are you searching for biography activities for elementary students? This guide covers how to teach biography projects with fun (free) anchor charts, book lists, and project ideas. Let&#;s make biography lessons fun!

1. Start by teaching the genre.

Always start each genre with an introductory lesson. Below, you will see a sample anchor chart for biographies. AND I&#;m linking the letters and clipart for you for FREE! That way, you can replicate a similar anchor chart for your students.

2. Integrate reading into students independent and partner reading time.

Utilize all the time you can with biographies. Plug them into daily centers and even book bins for students to read during downtime. Do you teach about biographies?

Last week we used the anchor chart above to introduce what a biography is (…isn&#;t George cute?)  I saw him originally at Apples, Crayons, and Caffeine. We brainstormed the things we thought a biography is, what&#;s included,  and the questions it might answer.

We read about Tomás Rivera in our reading series and also did a mini-unit on biographies and autobiographies.

I created a small, but substantial pack to go along with it.  My students wrote biographies about famous people, as well as interviewed each other and wrote a biography of a friend.  They even wrote an autobiography later in the week!
