Nash was born in London, the younger son of lawyer William Harry Nash who served as recorder of Abingdon and Caroline Maude Jackson. His mother came from a family with a naval tradition; she was mentally unstable and died in a mental asylum in In the family moved to Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire. Nash was educated at Langley Place in Slough and afterwards at Wellington College, Berkshire. He particularly enjoyed botany, but was unsure which career path to take. At first he worked as a newspaper reporter for the Middlesex and Berkshire Gazette, in His brother became a student at the Slade School of Art the same year, and through his brother Paul, met Claughton Pellew and Dora Carrington.
John Nash had no formal art training, but was encouraged by his brother to develop his abilities as a draughtsman. His early work was in watercolour and included Biblical scenes, comic drawings and landscapes. It is 54 years since the Royal Academy honoured John Northcote Nash (–), one of its longest-serving members, with a sprawling exhibition that gathered works from across six decades. As a painter, wood engraver, lithographer and illustrator, Nash's oeuvre centred on observation and love of the natural world and immersion in all things rural.
Occupying the main Royal Academy gallery spaces during the summer of , it was a singular honour for Paul Nash's industrious and distinctively accomplished younger brother, who, then aged 73, still had a decade of painting and exhibiting ahead of him. But it was also an event at odds with the broader visual culture of the s in which Pop Art's derivations and brash abstraction held sway.

Born in London's Kensington in , Nash and his family moved to Buckinghamshire in It was here that the garden of Wood Lane House at Iver Heath and the countryside of the Chiltern Hills greatly influenced him. After being educated at Wellington College, John started work as a trainee journalist but his life changed when his brother, who had enrolled at the Slade, brought home two fellow students, Claughton Pellew and Dora Carrington, who inspired him to become an artist. It was Dora who introduced him to his future wife Christine Kuhlensthal (), another talented artist who also studied at the Slade with Paul Nash in the years immediately preceding World War One.
