Eine Philosophie, die aufs Ganze geht
Seine Philosophie zielte auf das große Ganze. Hegel wollte ein System errichten, in dem die ganze Welt zu Hause ist. Es sollte die Wirklichkeit in ihrer Gesamtheit erfassen und das "Wie?" von Erkenntnisprozessen erklären. Für diesen Anspruch wurde er von seinen Anhängern schon zu Lebzeiten verehrt, sagt Sebastian Ostritsch von der Universität Stuttgart.
Hegels Vorlesungen in Berlin waren Events. In der jüngst erschienenen Biografie "Hegel. Der Weltphilosoph" berichtet Ostritsch von Graffiti auf den Fluren der Universität, die Aussprüche des Philosophen zitierten. Hegel war hip. Aus heutiger Sicht kaum vorstellbar.
Hegels Spitzname als Student war "alter Mann"
"Unter den gegenwärtigen massenmedialen Bedingungen hätte Hegel vermutlich keinen Erfolg gehabt", so Ostritsch. "Er war nicht jung, nicht dynamisch, und er hatte auch keine coolen, spritzigen Thesen und neuartigen Ismen, die man heute so gern vermarkten will." Mehr noch: "Er war nicht mal wirklich jung, als er jung war: Sein Spitzname als Student lautete 'alter Mann'."

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, the German idealist philosopher, was born at Stuttgart and entered the theological seminary at the University of Tübingen in Among his fellow students were Friedrich von Schelling and the poet Friedrich Hölderlin. After graduating he became, in , a resident tutor in the home of an aristocratic family at Bern, and in he took a similar post in Frankfurt. In he went to Jena, where Schelling had succeeded Johann Gottlieb Fichte as professor of philosophy and was developing an idealist philosophy of nature and metaphysics. Having been accepted as a teacher at Jena on the strength of his dissertation, De Orbitis Planetarum (), Hegel collaborated with Schelling in editing the philosophical journal Kritisches Journal der Philosophie and published his first book, Differenz des Fichte'schen und Schelling'schen Systems der Philosophie (). Notable articles by Hegel in the Kritisches Journal were "Glauben und Wissen" () and "Über die wissenschaftlichen Behandlungsarten des Naturrechts" (&#x;).
