Hz Maryam bint-Imran (AS) or The Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus (AS), holds an exalted position in the history of Islam. She is the only woman mentioned by name in The Quran, and there is an entire chapter, Surah Maryam, named after her.
In Surah al-Imran, Allah says: [1]
Behold! the angels said: &#;O Mary! Allah has chosen you and purified you, chosen you above the women of all nations.&#;
Also, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) described her as one of the most “perfect” women in the history of humanity. Narrated by Abu Musa al-Ash&#;ari (RA): [2]
Allah&#;s Apostle (PBUH) said, &#;Many amongst men attained perfection but amongst women none attained perfection except Mary the daughter of Imran, and Asiya the wife of Pharaoh.&#;
Hz Maryam (AS) belonged to the family of Imran. Her Mother prayed to Allah for a child. When her mother conceived, she vowed to Allah to dedicate her unborn child to His service, free from all worldly affairs. She also prayed for her child to be protected from the &#;touch&#; of Satan. Allah accepted her prayer and described it in these verses of Surah al-Imran: [3]
When wife of Imran said: &#;My Lord! surely I vow to You what is in my womb, to be devo
While Maryam (Mary), may Allah exalt her mention, was praying in her place of worship, an angel in the form of a man appeared before her. Filled with terror, she tried to flee, praying (what means):"…'Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah.' He said: 'I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy [i.e., son].' She said: 'How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?' He said: 'Thus [it will be]; your Lord says: 'It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter [already] decreed.''" [Quran: ]
The angel's visit caused Maryam, may Allah exalt her mention, great anxiety, which increased as the months went by. How could she face giving birth to a child without having a husband?
Later, she felt life kicking inside her. With a heavy heart, she left the place of prayer and went to , the city in which she had been born, where she settled in a simple farm house to avoid the public.
But fear and anxiety did not leave her. She was from a noble and pious family. Her father had not been an evil man nor
{And We made her and her son a sign for the worlds.}
The worldly life of the Spirit and Word of Allah Almighty and His last Messenger to the children of Israel, ‘Eesa ibn Maryam, and his mother Maryam bint ‘Imran, may Allah exalt their mention, was an ongoing series of afflictions and trials. Their worldly life was an example of asceticism and abstention from Worldly pleasures and aspiration for what is with Allah, the Exalted.
As for Maryam, may Allah exalt her mention, Allah Almighty chose her and preferred her over all the women of the earth. In the Quran, He, the Almighty, says (what means): {And [mention] when the angels said: "O Maryam, indeed Allah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the Worlds.} [Quran ]
Also, the Prophet was reported to have said: "Many amongst men reached perfection, but none amongst the women reached this level, except Maryam bint ‘Imran, Khaadeejah bint Khuwaylid, …"
She was born a female while her mother wished for a male baby:
The first test concerning Maryam, may Allah exalt her mention, was that her mother, who had wished that she would be given a boy so
Maryam (Mary) the daughter of ‘Imraan (Amram), may Allah exalt her mention, is a bright image of chastity and purity. She guarded her chastity and the result was {…so We blew into [her garment] through Our angel} [Quran ] Why did Allah The Almighty choose her from among all other women? That is because she{…believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures and was of the devoutly obedient.} [Quran ]
Dear Muslim sisters, please do not say, “I am not Maryam, may Allah exalt her mention, nor do I belong to the family of ‘Imraan, nor have I descended from the Messengers that I will be as chaste and pure as Maryam, may Allah exalt her mention. I am not the recipient of miracles like the supernatural miracles she witnessed.” Instead, you can say, “Why do I not take Maryam, may Allah exalt her mention, as an example?”Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {There was certainly in their stories a lesson.} [Quran ]
