Helon Habila was born in Nigeria in He studied literature at the University of Jos and taught at the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi, before moving to Lagos to work as a journalist. In Lagos he wrote his first novel, Waiting for an Angel, which won the Caine Prize in Waiting for an Angel has been translated into many languages including Dutch, Italian, Swedish, and French.
In , he moved to England to become the African Writing Fellow at the University of East Anglia. After his fellowship he enrolled for a PhD in Creative Writing. Biography
Helon Habila was born in Nigeria. He is a Professor of Creative Writing at George Mason University in Virginia, USA. He studied at the University of Jos in Nigeria, and the University of East Anglia, UK. He is the author of four novels: Waiting for an Angel (), Measuring Time (), Oil on Water () a genre-mixing environmental literary thriller, which has become an international bestseller, and the latest, Travellers (), about home and displacement and the fortunes of African migrants in ’s nonfiction book, The Chibok Girls () investigates the rise of Islamist militancy in Nigeria and the kidnapping of school girls by the Islamist terrorist group, Boko Haram. Helon Habila edited The Granta Book of The African Short Story (), and the British Council anthology, NW The Anthology of New Writing () which he co-edited with British author Lavinia other anthologies are Dreams Miracles and Jazz (), co-edited with Khadija George, and Dreams at Dawn (), comprising of short stories from writing workshops he conducted in Nigeria between with Zimbabwean writer Tsitsi Dangaremga and Canadian writer Madeleine ’s writings have won many honors and awards. After lecturing for three years at the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, Habila moved to Lagos in where he worked for the magazine, Hints. He later moved on to Vanguard Newspaper as Literary Editor.
