Antonio Gades Biography
Antonio Gades (), dance legend, is a leading figure in twentieth-century European dance and theater.
Dancer, choreographer, Gades&#; work sought to restore the essence of each step, defined by tradition, by folklore, by the people. His work can be seen as an attempt to study classical and popular Spanish culture in depth, to glorify it by honoring its roots and its sources. He was always aware that his work represented the cultural heritage of his people above all, and that he should tread carefully in order to respect its integrity, in order not to alter it.
His greatest achievement was to transform flamenco into a dramatic art, to dramatize his choreography, and disregard that flashy and gratuitous bravura that sometimes threatens to invade the flamenco scene. Gades had a vision of inclusive dance:
«people think that to dance you have to be young, handsome, tall/, thin &#;s&#; not true at all. Dance expresses an emotion and anyone can do it. One of the reasons our company is so successful is probably because it is truly human. It is not a company that dances, it&#;s a people that dances».

Né le 14 novembre à Elda, village de la province d&#;Alicante, Antonio Esteve Ródenas est le fils d&#;une famille d&#;ouvriers républicains. À Madrid, où sa famille s&#;est installée, il quitte l&#;école à l&#;âge de onze ans. Pour échapper à la pauvreté, il sera groom avant d&#;enchaîner les petits métiers. De son passage comme assistant photographe, il gardera le sens du cadrage et l&#;art d&#;assembler les séquences. Avec ce qu&#;il gagne, il s&#;offre ses premiers cours de danse et entre à seize ans dans la compagnie du Ballet espagnol de Pilar Lopez. En prenant le nom de Gades – nom que portait la ville de Cadix au temps des Romains –, il devient, à dix-sept ans, premier danseur de cette compagnie et affirme sa conception de la danse flamenco. Pour lui, la danse doit être aussi légère que la bande de terre qui s&#;avance dans l&#;Atlantique et sur laquelle se situe Cadix. Leyenda del baile, Antonio Gades () es una referencia esencial en el panorama dancístico y teatral europeo del siglo XX.
Bailarín, coreógrafo e intelectual de la danza, buscó con su obra restituir la esencia de cada paso, de los que han sido definidos por la tradición, por el folclore, por el pueblo. Su obra puede ser vista como una tentativa de estudiar en profundidad la cultura española, culta y popular, y de glorificarla honrando sus raíces y sus fuentes. Siempre se mantuvo consciente, sobre todas las cosas, de que su trabajo estaba representando la herencia cultural de su pueblo, y que debía andar con pies de plomo para respetar su integridad, para no desnaturalizarla.
Su mayor logro fue hacer del flamenco un arte dramático, teatralizando sus coreografías, y desdeñando ese aspecto exhibicionista y gratuitamente virtuoso que amenaza a veces con invadir la escena. Gades tenía una visión de la danza inclusiva:

Reconocido como uno de los más grandes bailarines y coreógrafos españoles, Antonio Esteve Ródenas, tal su verdadero nombre, nació el 14 de noviembre de en Elda (Alicante) pocos meses después del comienzo de la Guerra Civil Española.Gades fue un niño de la guerra y el hambre. Su padre, un obrero comunista de la construcción, abandonó el hogar cuando Antonio era un bebé, para luchar contra el fascismo en el frente madrileño de la guerra civil. Después de la guerra, la familia se reunió en Madrid, donde Antonio tuvo que abandonar la escuela, a los 11 años, para trabajar de mensajero. Ambicioso, intentó fortuna con el boxeo, los toros, el ciclismo y el baile.
Por casualidad, bailando en un bar para ganar algunas pesetas, fue visto por Pilar López, que dirigía la compañía de danza más importante de España.
