Dr. Swanson visited Vanderbilt for Research Day, October 17, , to present on her mid-range theory of caring. Dr. Swanson began her research career studying under Jean Watson, who developed a Theory of Caring. Dr. Swanson has modified this theory based upon empirical findings from her research on pregnancy and early fetal loss. Through the interplay between research, theory and practice Dr. Swansons theory has been translated into practice at University of North Carolina. The theory, and the model tested at UNC, involves the 5 Cs of caring: (1) caring capacity, (2) concerns and commitments, (3) conditions, (4) caring actions, and (5) consequences.

Kristen Swanson, PhD, RN, FAAN, has had an incredible impact on patient care, leadership, education, public service and clinical practice through her contributions to nursing science and nursing education. About Kristen Swanson
Kristen Swanson received her nursing degree from the University of Rhode Island in and her master's degree in nursing in from the University of Pennsylvania. She went on to get a doctorate degree from the University of Colorado with an emphasis in Psychosocial Nursing. Her books, periodical and journal articles and lectures have been ongoing since the early s.
Kristen Swanson was an affiliate professor and chair of the Family and Child Nursing program at the University of Washington Medical Center. Swanson also is a professor of Nursing Leadership and is a Robert Wood Johnson Nurse Executive Fellow. In August Swanson became the sixth dean of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing.
