Ustad Zakir Hussain was born on 9 March in Mumbai, India. He was the eldest son of the great tabla player Ustad Alla Rakha. Raised in a musical family, Zakir began learning the tabla very young. By the time he was seven, he was already playing the instrument, and at the age of 12, he gave his first concert.

He studied at St. Michael&#;s High School and later graduated from St. Xavier&#;s College in Mumbai. Zakir also received a doctorate in music from the University of Washington. He had two brothers, Taufiq Qureshi and Fazal Qureshi, who are also musicians. He also had a brother named Munawar, who died early.
