Ecclestone daughter accuses powerful developer of child sex abuse

A boiling feud among family members of one of Palm Beach County’s most prominent developers has erupted into two lawsuits: One over the multimillion dollar family trust, and another filed this week alleging sexual abuse by the family patriarch.
In the most recent action, which was filed on Monday, the youngest daughter of real estate developer E. Llwyd Ecclestone, Jr., sued him alleging he sexually molested her when she was a child. The explosive allegations by Wendy Walker Mendelsohn and her husband, Joshua, were made in an amended complaint filed July 2 in Palm Beach County Circuit Court.
Ecclestone, through his attorney, fired back a scathing denial, calling the complaint a “lie.” In a statement, he said the “vile” allegations were an attempt to force him to pay Mendelsohn and her husband an “exorbitant amount of money.”
Mendelsohn’s allegations follow a separate lawsuit filed by her just four months ago against her siblings and non-family trustees, including lawyer and former University of Florida President Marshall Criser, and real estate developer John Temple.

E. Llwyd Ecclestone was introduced to Palm Beach as a child in , when his parents rented a house on the corner of Seaspray Avenue and South Ocean Boulevard.
Ecclestone walked to Palm Beach Public School each morning. In the afternoon, he swam in the ocean and played at the now-defunct Seaspray Club.
Ecclestone’s parents were friends with Jim Campbell, the commanding officer of Morrison Field, now the home of Palm Beach International Airport. “It was an important airbase for protecting the southeast coast of Florida from the Germans,” he said.
One night before bed, Ecclestone remembers looking out his window and seeing a “huge, red ball of fire” in the ocean.
“I learned from Jim Campbell the next day, that what I saw was a German torpedo striking a United States oil tanker right off the beach of Palm Beach,” he said. “Two days later, Jim explained to me, with a smile on his face, that they found a life raft full of Germans that had landed on

Our History & Background
Lost Tree: The Legend
Gumbo-limbo trees are massive and almost indestructible. They were used in the early years of Florida development as starting stakes for county surveys.
Legend has it that a gumbo-limbo tree was used in the s when the Juno area was first surveyed. Years later, when the land was again surveyed for the Celestial Railroad, the tree had surprisingly disappeared. A second gumbo-limbo tree was chosen, but it too had vanished by the time a survey was undertaken in for US1.
This time the engineers took no chances, placing a concrete monument as a starting point for their survey. This monument too had disappeared when the area was again surveyed in
The “lost tree” legend appealed to Llwyd Ecclestone when he heard it in the late s. Mr. Ecclestone decided that “Lost Tree” would be an intriguing name for the golf club he was developing in northern Palm Beach County.
