Lord Mandelson’s book, The Third Man, Life At The Heart of New Labour has enjoyed a heady reception in the week since its publication. He has the relieved look of someone who has run a marathon without keel- ing over, as well he might, since he reveals that he only finished writing two weeks ago. “It only came off the presses the day before the launch,” he says. “It was a high-wire act. now I’m used to living dangerously, flying too close to the sun, but even for me it was a bit of a daredevil project.”

The ex-Labour spin chief, set to take up the Washington post, admitted he “ill-judged” his past remarks and insisted attitudes towards Trump had changed.
He told Fox News: "I consider my remarks about President Trump as ill-judged and wrong.
"I think that times and attitudes toward the president have changed."
In reference to Trump's second election as US president, he added: "I think that he has won fresh respect.
"He certainly has from me, and that is going to be the basis of all the work I do as His Majesty's ambassador in the United States."
His comments come as he is set to be confirmed as the new UK ambassador to Washington despite earlier reports the White House could block his appointment.
