Synopsis:
A Russian painter and graphic artist, who officially called himself an artist-researcher. He was one of the famous leaders of the avant-garde in his country, a theorist and founder, as well as a practitioner and teacher of analytical art, a unique reforming movement that had a significant impact on the artistic mindsets of many creators of the first half of the 20th century.
Filonov brought elements of scientific knowledge into the vanguard movement and was engaged in combining different ways of knowing the world, relying on intuition. In fact, the artist, who had phenomenal abilities in abstracted thinking, developed a symbolic understanding of painting, the aim of which was to depict not only the object but also thoughts about it and the way of its transmission, that is, added self-reflection to symbolism.
Filonov had many followers and imitators, but the strength of his original “accomplishment” was difficult to achieve. Pavel Filonov was a famous Russian artist, inventor of the analytical method of painting. You know, he was one of the most enigmatic artists of the XX century. He was called a genius and a charlatan, a rebel and a prophet, a hypnotist and a crazy man. All his life he lived in poverty and died of hunger, knowing that his pictures cost a lot of money. His work influenced the development of national and world art and was hidden for many years.
Pavel was born in into a peasant family. His parents moved to Moscow three years before their sons birth. The boys father worked as a coachman in the capital and his mother was a washerwoman. There were five children in the family.
Filonov didnt like to talk about his childhood. After the death of his father little Pavel helped his mother, he embroidered tablecloths and towels and sold them at the Sukharev Square. In , the artists mother died of tuberculosis. And in the same year Filonov moved to St. Petersburg, where he entered pictorial workshops and since he worked in academician L.E. Dmitriev-Kavkazskys private studio.

In –, he took part in the arts group Soyuz Molodyozhi created by artists Elena Guro and Mikhail Matyushin. In , he wrote the article The Canon and the Law, in which, he formulated the principles of analytical realism, or "anti-Cubism". According to Filonov, Cubism represents objects using elements of their surface geometry but "analytical realists" should represent objects using elements of their inner soul. He was faithful to these principles for the remainder of his life.
During the years to , Filonov was close to Vladimir Mayakovsky, Velimir Khlebnikov, and other futurists. He co-illustrated Khlebnikov's Selected Poems with Postscript, – alongside Kazimir Malevich during this time.
