He is proud that he has introduced so many members of that public to modern and contemporary art. "So many people who never thought they would be interested have found something at Tate Modern that has excited, sometimes perhaps irritated, but certainly engaged their interest. And then so many of those who have visited once seem to want to come back. Over the 10 years we have had an astonishing number of visitors."

There have been 52 major exhibitions at Tate Modern, a record of which he is also very proud. Perhaps the most memorable displays have been shown in the famous Turbine Hall where contemporary artists have been commissioned to produce new works that used the enormous space in new and varied ways. Among the works shown there were Anish Kapoor's huge Marsyas, a sculpture which spanned the full length and height of the hall.
"The Turbine Hall displays were a big risk and they remain a risk in a way," Serota admits. "No-one had really tried to do something on that scale in a museum for a big audience but the artists have responded brilliantly.
Nicholas Serota (m. ) is an art historian and Chair of The Arts Council of England, having previously been Director of the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford (), the Whitechapel Art Gallery () and Director of the Tate ().
Serota grew up in Hampstead, London and read Economics at Christ’s before switching to History of Art. He completed a Masters at the Courtauld Institute, specialising in the work of J. – he later became chairman of the Turner Prize jury, a role he served until
In his work at the Whitechapel Gallery, Serota organised influential exhibitions of Carl Andre, Eva Hesse and Gerard Richter, as well as then emerging artists such as Anthony Gormley. At the Tate, Serota inaugurated a programme called New Displays in which the central Duveen Galleries were restored and collection works were rotated. Herkunft
Sir Nicholas Andrew Serota wurde am Apr. im britischen Hampstead bei London geboren, wo er mit seiner jüngeren Schwester Judith auch aufwuchs. Sein Vater Stanley Serota war Ingenieur, seine Mutter Beatrice, geb. Katz, trug als in den Adelsstand erhobene "life peer" den Titel einer Baroness Serota und war einst Gesundheitsministerin im Kabinett von Harold Wilson.
Ausbildung
S. wurde an der Haberdasher's Aske's School erzogen.
