William Cuthbert Falkner (as the family spelled its name) was born on September 25, , in New Albany, Mississippi. He grew up in Oxford, Mississippi, the oldest of four brothers. Both parents came from wealthy families reduced to poverty by the Civil War (&#x;65; a war fought between the Northern and Southern states of the United States).
