Abdul Haleem Sharar contributed to the Urdu literature simultaneously in the field of novel writing, journalism, poetry, composition, biography and drama writing. He has tried his hand in various genres of literature and any genre of literature that he adopted, he created new dimensions in it. However, much of his fame rests on his novel writing especially historical novels. Based on the fame of Sharar’s historical novel writing, there is a critical fallacy in the world of literature that a writer of historical novels could not depict his era and that all his social novels are fiction and that have a little attachment to the reality and they are not the true reflection of the society. Thus, due to this critical fallacy, Sharar’s social novels were not only completely ignored but these novels were also rejected. This critical fallacy made Sharar’s social novels futile for the public even for the critics. Thus, this fallacy closed the chapter of criticism and analysis on Sharar’s social novels and these novels were pushed into the valley of oblivion from where they could not be taken out till date. Abdul Halim Sharar was a prolific writer, journalist and chronicler from Lucknow, best known for writing the fictional work of Anar Kali. Though on the first page of that book he had clearly mentioned it to be a work of fiction, still many believe that love interest of Salim – Anarkali did exist! The eternal love story of Salim and Anarkali has become a part of popular culture and has been adapted several times for plays and cinema. Firdaus-e-Bareen, Zawal-e-Baghdad, Husn ka Daku, Darbar-e-Harampur and Guzishta Lucknow are his best works. He wrote Islamic past, often mixed with fantasy and religious flavours.
Abdul Halim Sharar was born on September 4, in Lucknow, United Provinces of British India. His father Hakim Tafazzul Husain was an Islamic scholar. Sharar learnt Arabic and Persian and got married to his first cousin at the age of Though he pursued Greek medicine, he discontinued it in the middle. مولانا عبدالحلیم شرر 4 ستمبر کو لکھنؤ میں پیدا ہوئے۔ ان کے والد حکیم تفضل حسین اودھ کے آخری تاجددار واجد علی شاہ کے ملازم تھے۔نو سال کی عمر میں عبدالحلیم شرر بھی مٹیا برج چلے گئے۔ وہاں اپنے والد اور کافی سارے علما کے زیر سایہ عربی اور فارسی کی ابتدائی تعلیم حاصل کی۔ فن شاعری میں علی حیدر نظم طباطبائی کے شاگرد ہوئے۔
اس کے بعد انھوں نے لکھنؤ اور دہلی میں مزید تعلیم حاصل کی۔ انگریزی کا زمانہ تو اگرچہ تھا مگر انھوں نے کسی مستند ادارے سے باقائدہ تعلیم حاصل نہیں کی۔ تعلیم کے ساتھ تصنیف اور تالیف کا مشغلہ جاری تھا۔ ان کی صلاحیتوں کو دیکھ کر منشی نولکثور نے انھیں اودھ اخبار کا نائب اڈیڈٹر بنا دیا۔ اس میں انھوں نے مختلف موضوعات پر متعدد مضامین لکھے جو مقبول عام ہوئے۔
