La Commission électorale nationale indépendante (Céni) du Burundi a rejeté la candidature d'Agathon Rwasa, figure de l'opposition, aux élections législatives prévues en juin Ancien leader du Congrès national pour la liberté (CNL), Rwasa, qui avait terminé deuxième à la présidentielle de , avait quitté son parti en mars pour rejoindre la coalition « Un Burundi pour tous ». Cependant, cette coalition a vu plusieurs de ses membres, dont Rwasa, se voir interdits de participation, en raison de la loi électorale qui interdit à une personne ayant quitté un parti de se présenter sous une autre bannière.
Outre Rwasa, d'autres membres de la coalition, tels qu'Euphrasie Mutenzinka et Anatole Karorero, ont également été écartés pour des raisons similaires. La Céni a expliqué que leur participation était incompatible avec le code électoral, interdisant à un candidat de se présenter sous deux listes différentes. Bien que Rwasa réfute cette décision en affirmant ne plus appartenir au CNL, cette situation a mis en lumière les obstacles politiques croissants pour les opposants dans le pays.

On Sunday, a group of CNL party officials organized an extraordinary congress in the town center of the province of Ngozi (northern Burundi). They chose Nestor Girukwishaka as their new leader for a period of 5 years. Agathon Rwasa, traditional CNL leader, speaks of “political mercenarism”. He has the support of the coalition of African opposition leaders who threaten to &#;seize the EAC Court of Justice&#; if the Burundian authorities do not stop their harassment against the former Hutu rebel leader. The congress took place in a climate of tension. Several CNL members were arrested or prevented from traveling on the national territory.

Who is Agathon Rwasa?
Agathon Rwasa is a Burundian politician and the leader of the National Liberation Forces. He was a Hutu militia leader during the Burundi Civil War.
Rwasa was reported to be a Born-again Christian.
