El piloto de guerra guantanamero, general de brigada Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez, primer cosmonauta cubano, de América Latina y del Tercer Mundo, cumple 80 años este 29 de enero y ostenta con orgullo sobre su pecho la primera medalla honorífica impuesta de Héroe de la República de Cuba.
Tamayo orbitó la Tierra veces y durante sus más de siete días en el espacio cósmico, aplicó 21 experimentos de nuestra Academia de Ciencias. Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez (Baracoa, Cuba, January 29, ) is a war pilot, cosmonaut, Hero of the Republic of Cuba and Hero of the Soviet Union. He was the first non-American American to fly into space, the first Cuban and Latin American cosmonaut, the first native speaker of Spanish, and the first person of African descent to fly into space. He is a brigadier general and head of the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (Ministry of Defense) of Cuba.
Biography
Childhood and early years
Tamayo was born into a humble Afro-descendant family. From a very young age and being an orphan he began to work, at the age of 13 he worked as a shoe shine, carpenter's assistant and newspaper had to study and work at the same time because he was the only breadwinner for his family.
During the government of General Fulgencio Batista, he participated in several student demonstrations in protest against his government.
After the Cuban revolution, on January 1, , he entered the "Rebel Army" Technical Institute and then the Revolutionary Armed Forces. He became a fighter pilot and underwent MiG fighter pilot training in the Soviet U
Born into an impoverished Cuban family and then orphaned at a young age, Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez&#;s childhood dreams to fly seemed near impossible. Méndez was later quoted as saying &#;I had dreamed of flying since I was a child&#; but before the revolution, all paths into the sky were barred because I was a boy who came from a poor black family. I had no chance of getting an education&#;.
However, on 18 September , the Cuban became the first black person, Latin American and Cuban to go into space, and upon his return received the Hero of the Republic of Cuba medal and the Order of Lenin from the Soviets. His extraordinary career propelled him to international fame, and he later became Director of International affairs in the Cuban armed forces, amongst other positions.
However, despite his achievements, his story is hardly known amongst American audiences today.
