“Art is the spark caused by the friction between an individual and life.”

Expressionist painter Marianne von Werefkin was described by her contemporaries as a forward-thinking, energetic, and passionate personality, “brimming with a revolutionary spirit against all that is dull and timid.” Her character was as brilliant as the colours she so boldly brought to her canvases. Her life was shaped by great personal and intellectual freedom, out of which arose her radically different expressive style, which went on to pave the way for German expressionism.

Werefkin’s free-spirited temperament can also be traced to her origins. A native of Russia, from a noble family that appreciated art, she enjoyed the best possible education and developed a strong artistic identity early on. As a private pupil of Ilya Repin, the most significant representative of Russian realism, she enjoyed a reputation as the “Russian Rembrandt” as early as The world was thus already her oyster when she relocated to Munich along with her partner Alexej von Jawlensky.

Summary of Marianne von Werefkin

Writing about the diaries which Marianne von Werefkin composed during the s, the writer Natalya Tolstaya noted that they reveal "a soul molded by much suffering and many a loss, the soul of a woman and an artist". This statement might be taken to apply to Werefkin's entire body of work, which was shaped not only by a century's worth of Russian and European artistic tradition, but also by an intense social and spiritual consciousness, and by the peculiar pressures brought to bear on her as a woman in a creative world dominated by men. Her work, still undervalued in relation to that of her peers, including Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, can now be recognized as an important contribution to European Expressionism, her career as breaking down various barriers to women's acceptance as modern artists.

Accomplishments

  • Various members of the Expressionist movement, including Wassily Kandinksy and Marc Chagall, were of Russian heritage. But Marianne von Werefkin's work provides us with the most striking evidence of the thread that runs through modern painting from lateth-century Russian Realism to the emotive abstraction of early-twentieth-century

By practicing persistently she finally managed to use drawing and painting instruments with her right hand again.

In she met Alexej von Jawlensky, who desired to be her protégé, and in she, Jawlensky, and their servant moved to Munich. Werefkin studied with other Russians in Munich at an art school directed by the Slovenian Anton Ažbè.

For the sake of Jawlensky's painting, Werefkin interrupted her painting for almost ten years.
