Georges Seurat is chiefly remembered as the pioneer of the Neo-Impressionist technique commonly known as Pointillism, or Divisionism, an approach associated with a softly flickering surface of small dots or strokes of color. His innovations derived from new quasi-scientific theories about color and expression, yet the graceful beauty of his work is explained by the influence of very different sources. Initially, he believed that great modern art would show contemporary life in ways similar to classical art, except that it would use technologically informed techniques. Later he grew more interested in Gothic art and popular posters, and the influence of these on his work make it some of the first modern art to make use of such unconventional sources for expression. His success quickly propelled him to the forefront of the Parisian avant-garde. Georges Seurat () was a French post-Impressionist artist known for his innovative painting techniques and his role in the development of Neo-Impressionism. Born in Paris, Seurat studied at the École Municipale de Sculpture et Dessin and later at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he was taught by Henri Lehmann.
Seurat's artistic personality combined qualities that are usually thought of as opposed and incompatible: on the one hand, his extreme and delicate sensibility, on the other, a passion for logical abstraction and an almost mathematical precision of mind. His large-scale work A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (–) altered the direction of modern art by initiating Neo-Impressionism, and is one of the icons of late 19th-century painting.
Seurat's artistic career began in the late s, when he started studying art at the École Municipale de Sculpture et Dessin. He later moved on to the École des Beaux-Arts, where he was taught by Henri Lehmann. Seurat's studies resulted in a well-considered and fertile theory of contrasts: a theory to which all his work was thereafter subjected.

Georges Pierre Seurat ( sur-AH-,_---əSUU-rah 2 December – 29 March ) was a French post-Impressionist artist. His scientific ideas about colour then led him to develop a different painting technique. He painted in tiny dots of colour, with the theory that the viewer's eye would mix them. This technique is called "pointillism". He also used conté crayon for drawings on paper with a rough surface.
His large-scale work A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (–) altered the direction of modern art by initiating Neo-Impressionism, and is one of the icons of late 19th-century painting.
