HISTORY
The French-based Red Bull KTM Tech3 team is one of the most experienced teams competing in the MotoGP™ World Championship, with its proud history dating as far back as
Located in Provence in southern France, the team was formed by Hervé Poncharal and colleagues who began their Grand Prix adventure by contesting in the cc World Championship with Dominique Sarron. In , Tech3 ran the American rider John Kocinski in the cc series, before signing emerging French talent Olivier Jacque, two years later.
It was to be a partnership that elevated Tech3 and Jacque’s profile to a new level. The French rider won a dramatic cc title in the season finale against teammate Shinya Nakano at Phillip Island in – with the Tech3 Team thrilling fans worldwide with one of the closest finishes to a title fight ever to occur in history.
A year later in , Tech3 further enhanced its growing reputation by joining the MotoGP™ class, starting a long and successful collaboration with Yamaha in the premier series.

So far in , it’s been business as usual, with Poncharal - whose official title remains ‘Team Principal’ - attending pre-season tests for MotoGP and Moto3 as well as the opening grands prix.
“For some people it counts, but I don't care too much about my title or what my business card says,” Poncharal, who is also president of teams' association IRTA, told .
“When Tech3 first started in ’89, with just three of us, I was also the truck driver and doing the cooking!
“Then we grew. From running one rider in cc we went to two riders, we won the championship in and went up to cc, which became MotoGP. Then we decided to enter Moto2, so we created a second team, which is now the Moto3 team. Then MotoE began, so that made three teams. We now employ about 50 people including hospitality, marketing and office staff.
“Of course, as you grow, you need to change the organisation and adapt your own role. The timing was right to promote Nico from crew chief to team manager for several reasons.

L’Inde, une belle surprise ? Herve Poncharal is a well-known face and name to most in- and outside the MotoGP™ paddock; a respected figure who runs not only Tech 3, but also acts as the President of the International Road-Racing Teams Association (IRTA). Poncharal was a professional rider himself in his early years, and got his Grand Prix schooling in team management with Honda France in the s before taking an adventurous decision to form his own team – Tech 3 – in Early highlights in the team’s history include American rider John Kocinski’s podiums on Suzuki machinery in the cc class, the move onto Yamaha bikes and the emergence of team-mates Olivier Jacque and Shinya Nakano as race winners in , followed by Jacque’s dramatic cc World Championship win for the team as he beat Nakano in Australia.
