Miroslav Šašek
Miroslav Šašek was born on 18th November in the Prague district of Žižkov. His mother, Anna Marie (née Nováková), born on 17th January , was the daughter of a postal clerk. She had studied typing and shorthand at secretarial school and then worked as a correspondence clerk. On 19th September she married accountant Alois Šašek, who was born on 18th June into an ancient family of millers that since had owned (and in fact still owns) the celebrated Lucký Watermill near Chodovlice in central Bohemia.

On 15th October , at the age of just 41, Alois Šašek died in Sedlčany, where he had been working as the manager of an insurance office. Anna Marie now remained alone with two children, the ten-year-old Miroslav and his six-year-old sister Věra, and she returned with them to Prague. In Sedlčany Miroslav attended local primary school, where at the end of his fifth year of study () he gained grades one – the highest on the scale – in all subjects. Born 16th November , Miroslav Sasek grew up in Prague. After finishing school he wanted to study to become a painter, but his parents were disapproving, so to appease them he decided to studied architecture instead. He did however study drawing and painting with Czech landscape artist Otakar Blažíček, and later in moved to Paris to study at the École des Beaux Arts. Just at the onset of his illustration career, prompted by the Czech coup, Mr Sasek decided not to return to his homeland and instead emigrate to Munich.
Whilst earning a living as a graphic artist in advertising and architecture, Mr Sasek paid a visit to Paris, where it suddenly dawned upon him that there were not any books written for children to learn about their city. So in he created a children’s guide book to Paris, titled This is Paris. In doing so, he began what would become his life&#;s work. Following the success of This is Paris he went on to produce books on London (), Rome (), New York () and many others. In total Mr Sasek produced 18 books in the series, with plans of others including Bombay and Canada. Sadly, in he died while visiting his sister in Switzerland, leaving those plans unrealised.

For Baby Boomers whose childhood dreams were of Paris and Hong Kong rather than Narnia and Hobbiton, Miroslav Šašek’s This Is picture-book series offered a magic carpet to take them there. Beginning with This IsParis, published in by the British firm W. H. Allen, the exiled Czech artist charted an idiosyncratic, primary-color-saturated path through the midth-century world. In total, he produced 18 oversize, pen-and-gouache illustrated Baedekers for the pint-size set, including This IsSan Francisco, This IsIsrael, and This Isthe United Nations. The books were translated into many languages, including French, German, Italian, Spanish, Finnish, Korean, and Japanese. In , Rizzoli reissued the first few books in the series with the seemingly fanciful idea of marketing a half-century-old set of city and country guides to the most globalized generation in history. By now, 17 of the original 18 have been reprinted. More than 1 million copies have since been sold.
