“ Our cherished colleague Stanley Wolpert died suddenly and unexpectantly at the age of 91 on February 19, , while on a family visit to his son Adam in northern California. He leaves his beloved wife of 66 years, Dorothy, and his sons Daniel and Adam, as well as three grandchildren, Sam, Max, and Sabine.

A native of Brooklyn, Stanley received his B.A. at City College of New York, and later his M.A. and Ph.D. in Indian history from the University of Pennsylvania.  He arrived at UCLA in and was promoted to Full Professor in   He was Department Chair and won the Distinguished Teaching Award in    He took emeritus status in

As a distinguished and prolific historian of South Asia, he published more than a dozen scholarly books including biographies of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru of India as well as biographies of Mohammad Ali Jinna and Zulfikar Bhutto of Pakistan.  His New History of India (Oxford) has appeared in eight editions, and his more general cultural introduction, India (California), is in its fourth edition.   Among his four novels, the best known is Nine Hours

On March 12, , the former Managing Director of Oxford University Press in Pakistan, Ameena Sayyid, posted on Facebook a message from Dorothy Wolpert, wife of writer-author Stanley Wolpert: “I write to share the grievous and shocking news that my beloved Stanley has died suddenly and unexpectedly during a visit to our son and his family. The incredible swiftness without suffering was a great gift to him which he has shared with us, but the suddenness is very painful. He admired you very much and treasured your friendship over the years of your working relationship. He regretted that he could not return to Pakistan in recent years. Perhaps you can convey this news to his many friends in Pakistan. We will have a memorial on May 26 at UCLA.”

Wolpert, who died Feb. 19, is revered for his contributions to literature and the history of South Asia. He published more than a dozen scholarly books including biographies of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru of India as well as biographies of Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto of Pakistan. His “New History of India” has appeared in eight editions, and his more general cultural introduction, “India,” is in its fourth edition.

Wolpert’s teaching career at UCLA spanned six decades including time served as chair of the history department and in a vice chancellorship. Campus colleagues, students and the literary world remember him as the epitome of grace and intellect.

“Stanley was always willing to make time for a fellow colleague or student, listening to a problem, or grabbing a sandwich in the sculpture garden,” said Peter Loewenberg, UCLA professor emeritus of history. “He was a wonderful lecturer and captivating teacher.
