Thomas More wrote Utopia in , which was the forerunner of the utopian literary genre. More served as an important counselor to King Henry VIII of England, serving as his key counselor in the early s, but after he refused to accept the king as head of the Church of England, he was tried for treason and beheaded (he died in London, England, in ). More is noted for coining the word "Utopia," in reference to an ideal political system in which policies are governed by reason. He was canonized by the Catholic Church as a saint in , and has been commemorated by the Church of England as a "Reformation martyr."
Early Years
Many historical records suggest that Thomas More was born in London, England, on February 7, , although some scholars believe the year of his birth to be He attended St. Anthony's School in London, one of the best schools of his day, and as a youth served as a page in the household of John Morton, archbishop of Canterbury and chancellor of England (and future cardinal). Thomas More
1. Introduction
According to Erasmus, the young Thomas More “devoted himself to the study of Greek literature and philosophy”, and
[a]s a youth even worked on a dialogue in which he supported Plato’s doctrine of communalism, extending it even to wives. (23 July letter to Ulrich von Hutten [EW –7; –96])
Commenting on the older More, Erasmus described him as having a “clearly philosophic character” (late letter to John Faber [EW ]) and a home that could rightly be called “another Platonic academy” but which gave first place to piety, Scripture, and the wisest and most saintly Church Fathers (late [EW ] and 22 May <> letter to William Gonell [EW –90]). It was also a home in which his daughters received the same education as his son (c. September letter to Guillaume Budé [EW –76]). As the More scholar Elizabeth McCutcheon recently summarized the education of More’s daughters, it was
based on a study of Greek and Latin texts, … all the liberal and humane arts (grammar, rhetoric, logic, poetry, mathematics, philosophy, and astronomy) as well as theology and med

Sir Thomas More: Biography, Facts and Information
Today we know Sir Thomas More primarily as the author of Utopia, and as one of the more famous martyrs of Henry VIII’s reign. The popular image is of a man – principled, steadfast, courageous – who placed his own conscience above his king’s demands.
Yet if you were to ask More’s contemporaries to describe him, their words would be as conflicted and contradictory as the man himself. He was a brilliant scholar of the Renaissance who died rather than betray the Catholic church.
As a young man, he seriously contemplated joining the priesthood, only to become one of the most successful politicians of his time. And he was a father who insisted his three daughters have the same education as his son. Perhaps more than any other courtier of Henry’s reign, More embodied the searching, troubled spirit of the early 16th century.
After his death, and for centuries thereafter, Sir Thomas More was known as the most famous victim of Henry VIII’s tyranny. It was More’s execution – far more than those of Anne Boleyn or Thomas Cromwell or Margaret Pole – which established the king&rsq
