Introducing Aleem Maqbool, the BBC’s new Religion Editor

By Lianne Kolirin

The BBC’s new Religion Editor has expressed his hopes for the role, saying he is “pushing at an open door” when it comes to pitching faith-based news stories.

Aleem Maqbool, who took up his role in April,  told the fourth annual Religion Media Festival on Monday that he is confident faith-based stories will remain part of the network’s news agenda.

Maqbool, who succeeds Martin Bashir after he left the role a year ago, told the audience at north London’s JW3 centre: “There’s this sense outside the BBC that some editors are nervous about religion and faith stories. I haven’t found that.

“I have found that there’s a recognition that we need to report on those areas. It may be a honeymoon period, but I feel like I’m pushing at an open door. There’s nobody saying ‘no you can’t do that’.”

Announcing his appointment, the BBC said Maqbool would “take the lead on the BBC’s expert analysis and insight on the major themes and issues affecting different faiths in the UK and around the world”.

Aleem Maqbool was BBC News’ North America correspondent from until he started the new role. His

Almost every aspect of official ceremony surrounding the death of the Queen has been steeped in religious significance.

But accounts from those close to Elizabeth II emphatically suggest that to her, faith went far beyond protocol and duty.

It shaped and guided her throughout her life in a way the public only started to appreciate later in her reign.

"I think there have been only two Sundays since I've been here - apart from Covid times - that she didn't come to church," says Kenneth MacKenzie, who for 15 years was domestic chaplain to the Queen when she was at Balmoral.

In the months each year the late Queen was in Scotland, she would attend the little parish church of Crathie Kirk where she would sit in a pew to one side, upholstered in purple velvet.

While one of her constitutional titles was Supreme Governor of the Church of England, this church she attended so regularly was Presbyterian.

Mr MacKenzie felt that might have allowed the Queen to feel she could go more as a member of the congregation, rather than as a fig
