Cath hodsman biography definition

Phew, just over a month to go on my posting as Artist in Residence at WWT Slimbridge

I have had so much fun. I have met some lovely peoplethose who work at Slimbridge, and visit Slimbridge - everyone has been fab.

                                                      ART FINISHED AT SLIMBRIDGE

Despite my many, many animated chats about all things arty and insecty with those who have popped by to visit. I have still managed to get some work doneMicroscopy art is my new thing and I have finished 2 pieces at Slimbridge
The first one is a study of the female worker honey bee (Apis mellifera) and the second, a study of insect proboscises. Really chuffed because the honey bee study is going in the Autumn BritishBeekeepers Association Magazine, as part of a feature on bee anatomy.

I have also completed a painting of a White Tailed Bumble Bee with a Papaver Orientalis

So I have finished so
I am busy reviewing the dates I have booked for this year. Lots to look forward tothe Amateur Entomologists' Members' Day and AGM at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery ,as well as my Artist in Residence positions at Naturein Art and Slimbridge Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust  and so much more this year.

One of the events I am most looking forward to is my annual involvement with the Help a HedgehogHospital Charity    These are a fab group of people who work tirelessley to support the well being/care/conservation/education of and about hedgehogs. Since the 's, hog numbers have declined by 95%. Without groups like HaHH, hogs would  now be facing potential extinction.
"Hugo"a print I did for HaHHto help raise funds

Every year the HaHHhold an event at The Corinium Museum, ?a_id=&tt=cotswold&eventStatus=list&eventAction=view&eventId= to educate and excite children about year is slightly different. There will still be the usual craft/hog events, but I will aso be joining them on March 30th to run sessions called   "Why are Insects Fab? I will be tea

What's on

Cath Hodsman, a Cotswold-based Wildlife & Natural History artist, who specialises in painting & sketching invertebrates and counts Buckingham Palace amongst her clients, will be leading this unique and fascinating day.

This painting workshop is aimed at watercolour painting beginners and for those who want to learn more about the hidden worlds that are all around us. It will examine the essential and fascinating relationship between pollinating insects and the plants that they live in, on and around. It will look at how plants provide food for insects, in return for pollination and how the insects obtain this food.

Each student will have exclusive use of their own dedicated microscope, magnifying glasses and macro photographs, as well as Cath’s own huge insect (ethically sourced) specimen collection, to look at the anatomy of insects, in order to produce a unique and detailed watercolor painting.

An equipment list will be sent out on booking a place on the course

How to sketch the hind leg of a honeybee

In advance of the Society of Biology training course she is giving in March, Wildlife and Natural History artist Cath Hodsman shares tips on accurate insect drawing.

I paint and sketch all wildlife but my main specialism is entomology. I seek to get as much detail in my work as possible in order to pay homage to the hidden beauty of insects. As a result, I use microscopes to ensure I obtain as much anatomical accuracy as possible in my work. To enter the secret world of insects is fascinating and I run many arts courses on how to use microscopes to produce detailed and unique artistic and scientific studies of incredible insects. I am particularly fascinated by bees, especially with the well documented plight of pollinating insects. I paint and sketch them a lot in my work and as such, I am a member of the British Beekeepers Association. I think they are amongst our most fascinating and beautiful insects. To find out more about the anatomy of honey bees, I can recommend a wonderful site called How Stuff Works. It provides lots of great facts on bee anatomy.  I thought that it might be interesting to enter their secret world by doi
