Catriona became Saskatoon's first woman gold medal winner at the Olympic Games since when she won the metre speed skating championship at Nagano, Japan, in Olympic record time of seconds.
Catriona was born in Saskatoon on Dec. 13, , one of three daughters of Iain and Shauna LeMay.
Soccer was one of her early interests but she also found time for ringette and track and field, setting Saskatchewan high school records in track and representing Saskatchewan at the Canada Games at Kamloops.
Speed skating was her first love and she was competing with the Saskatoon Lions Club as early as She won many trophies, including the club's outstanding skater award seven times. Catriona left her mark in Saskatchewan, holding provincial outdoor records on 24 occasions, provincial indoor records on seven occasions and being honored with the Dairy Foundation Fitness Foundation award five times. She was also named Sask Sport female athlete of the year twice.

Saskatoon’s Catriona LeMay Doan has been a force in women’s speed skating ever since she took up the sport at age nine. She joined the Saskatoon Lions Speed Skating Club in and was soon showing signs of greatness in this sport winning the city championship and ultimately the Canadian bantam championship in her first year of competition. By , Catriona had captured Canadian championships in midget (), juvenile () and junior (). She competed in the Canada Games in and collecting a silver in the metres and a bronze in the metres in the games. In , she joined the Canadian National Team and began training in Calgary.
From to , Catriona slowly made her way up the ranking in the world speed skating community. Things really came together for “Cat” in when she was the gold medallist in metres and bronze in the 1, metres at the Nagano Olympic Games. She followed this up with the World Single Distance Championship first place in the metres and second place in the 1, metres. As well, she was first in both of these events in the World Cup standings. “In a cold arena in Saskatoon is where it all started, but my parents weren't sports people, and they immigrated from Scotland. My sisters and I would see different sports and say, ‘I want to try this’, and I actually started with ringette.”
Catriona went from ringette to speed skating alongside her older sister, and she not only excelled but set the stage for a distinguished career.
