David edgar artist biography

Plastiquarium® founder David Edgar lives in the Carolina Foothills where he is a full time artist retired from the Art Department at UNC Charlotte. A third generation Floridian, David worked as an Imagineer on the EPCOT Center and Tokyo Disneyland projects for the Walt Disney World Company. He has also held career posts in arts administration as Director of the Crealde School of Art in Winter Park and directed The Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, Florida for 12 years. While earning his MFA in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, Edgar worked as a preservation technician in the conservation department of the Henry Ford Museum. He also holds a BFA in Sculpture from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

For over 30 years David’s artwork primarily focused on formal constructivist sculpture in fabricated steel. On Super Bowl Sunday in February the muses spoke to David in a different voice and he started cutting up and making artwork out of empty plastic detergent bottles. One thing led to another and now his work in recyclable plastics has been shown in over 50 gallery and museum exhibitions both nationally and abroad.

Balance is crucial for sustaining an arts-based practice.

I have always had multi-year gaps between study, where I&#;ve worked in music venue management and arts administration, as well as being a professional artist and travelling.

After leaving secondary school, I spent some time learning architectural drafting. I soon realised it wasn&#;t my thing, and shortly after applied to study fine art at the National Art School in Darlinghurst. I was there for four years and received a certificate and diploma in printmaking.

Coming to Tasmania, though, was how my interest in drawing, landscape, and geology began. In contrast to Sydney, where I am from, these elements were the most visually striking to me. I studied for a further 10 years, completing my PhD in at the University of Tasmania.

Tasmania has a certain type of light. It’s a hard one to completely grasp, but is noticeable in comparison to every other place I have been. Perhaps it’s just the way I look at it. But, for me, Tasmania has very strong tonal contrasts, a low-key tonal range, and not much in the way of saturated colour. It&#;s very subdued. That&#;s way I see it.

Plastiquarium

 : recycled plastic art

Artist Statement

by David Edgar

The Plastiquarium is immersed in mystery. Modern myth suggests that a century of increasing phosphate levels in Earth's marine environment caused new, synthetic life forms to emerge. As recyclable HDPE plastic containers spread concentrates of consumer product pollutants, the Plastiquarium creatures evolved in the image of their packaging forbearers.

As a sculptor, my work has always been strongly informed by the 20th century tradition of found object assembly. Perhaps, in the context of a mid-life catharsis, I recently interrupted over 25 years of working in steel, and began making decorative artworks from recyclable detergent bottles. With quality of craft as an important issue for me, I find that making recycled plastic art truly energizes my creative spirit. One of the results is the marine creatures of the Plastiquarium.

Considering the development of this new artwork, I realize that there are a number of recognizable influences that place the work into the context of a larger continuum. The Plastiquarium certainly fits within the genre of collage a
