Father Augustus Tolton

Saints arise from the exigencies of the eras within which they live. Saints are of human stock but have the genius to step forward and bring the gospel message to the contradictions of their time. In the case of Augustus Tolton it is the long period of black slavery in this country and the nation’s Civil War foisting a resolution to uncompensated black servitude and the tumultuous period of Reconstruction of a nation torn to shreds over this issue. Augustus witnessed mistreatment of his people and became a victim himself of such mistreatment.

Without a national program to assist the assimilation of freed slaves into the fabric of the country, its schools, social and educational institutions and politics were found generally off limits to blacks especially where whites were invested. What Tolton experienced in that time of social ambivalence is stuff we read about in history books or view in certain documentaries.

A nation experimenting with democracy and certain notions of freedom was unable to process the dignity of black skin amidst the kaleidoscope of ethnic diversity emerging therein. Tolton’s earliest schooling was interrupted by

Father Augustus Tolton, the First Black American Priest, Knew Freedom in Christ

At night the river looked deeper than ever as the woman rowed across it with her three small children. That was dangerous enough, but they were being pursued.

They were being shot at.

They were fleeing for their lives.

The Civil War had just begun. The woman and her children were slaves. They had fled Missouri and were crossing over to freedom in Illinois, and to freedom. That night, the woman evaded her pursuers. When she landed on the northern bank of the river, she pulled her children to their knees and prayed: “Now, you are free; never forget the goodness of the Lord.” And, with that, one of her children, Augustine Tolton, later to become the first African American to be ordained a priest, was “freed.”

Augustine Tolton was born April 1, His parents were slaves, so he too became one. His parents were Catholics, so he, too, was baptized into his parents’ Holy Faith. His father, Peter, was an honest and good man. Seven years after Augustine — or Gus, as he was known — was born, war broke out between the states. Peter talked to his wife, Martha, about his desire to escape and enlist in th

From Slave to Priest – The Journey of Augustus Tolton

This is about a man who born into slavery in Missouri.  He went on to become the first African American from the United States ordained a Catholic priest.

I would like folks across America to learn about him. He was a man whose goodness shined like a brilliant star.  And he inspired others by his gentle and caring example.  Say &#;Hello&#; to Augustus Tolton.

Born a slave

On April 1, , Peter Tolton may have paced nearby as his wife, Martha Jane, gave birth to her second son. They named him Augustus (after his uncle). The baby was baptized soon after in St. Peter&#;s Catholic Church in Brush Creek, Missouri.  Mrs. Savilla Elliot stood as Augustus&#; godmother.

It was a situation a bit out of the ordinary at the time.  That was because Mrs. Elliot and her husband Stephen Elliot happened to be the &#;owners&#; of Augustus&#; mom and dad.  The Tolton’s were slaves, and their three children, Charley, Augustus, and Anne, were born into slavery.

This situation was unusual, in another way, too.  The slave owners and their slaves were Catholic. This was quite uncommon, especially in the mostly Protestant south.

Augustus was s

Augustine (Augustus) Tolton ()

Born into slavery in , Fr. Augustine (nicknamed Augustus) Tolton was one of the country’s first African American Roman Catholic priests. Tolton shares early black Catholic history with three brothers of Irish-African American ancestry: James, Sherwood, and Patrick Healy. The Healy brothers were ordained two to three decades prior to Tolton but did not encounter the widespread racial prejudice faced by Tolton.

Augustine John Tolton, sometimes referred to as Augustus, was born on April 11, to Martha Jane Chisley and Peter Paul Tolton, both enslaved people from neighboring farms near Brush Creek in Missouri. Both parents were raised and baptized as Catholics, according to the stipulations of their owners. In Martha and Peter were allowed to marry but remained under their original slave ownerships. The couple had three children, including Augustine.

After the outbreak of the Civil War, Peter Tolton enlisted in the Union Army and died in a St. Louis hospital. When Augustine was nine, Martha escaped slavery and the family crossed the Mississippi River into Quincy, Illinois. Martha found factory work there and joined Saint Boniface Church, comprised mo
