Olympic surfer Gabriel Medina hospitalised after wipeout; withdraws from tour
There'll be time for blame but that time isn't now. My heart goes out to all Palisadians—rich, poor, young, old, Democrat, Republican, OGs and blow-ins.
Even though I left my father’s house in Pacific Palisades in , moved to Australia and never lived there again, Pacific Palisades will be a part of me until the day I die.
One of the reasons I felt so comfortable in Australia was that Palisadians are LA’s larrikins. My Palisades elders—Lance Carson, the Auberg brothers, Jim Ganzer, Robbie Dick, Roger McGrath, George Trafton (and too many others to name)—set a very high bar for us.
All of them surfed great, had impeccable style in and out of the water, drove fast cars fast, solved problems with their fists when necessary, traveled the world to surf, and from Pali, to Samo, to Uni, to Westlake, to Marymount they could find their way into the hearts of girls, not to mention any party, concert, or club.
However, when the sun came up the next morning, they were duty bound to paddle out like it never happened.
I always knew that one day I would outgrow Santa Monica Bay. A
Gabriel Medina: the story of Brazils most popular surfer
Gabriel Medina is one of the most popular surfers of the 21st century.
The virtuous wave rider is venerated and loved by millions, but he's also a sometimes controversial character with a cold and ruthless competitive drive.
In less than a decade, the Brazilian has become a surfing machine that is difficult to stop and beat.
Gabriel Medina won the ASP World Tour and the World Surf League and has no plans to stop writing his name in the glorious chapter of competitive surfing.
But why is Gabriel Medina such a polarizing figure? How could a Latin American kid from a poor background take over an Anglophone-dominated sport?
Gabriel Medina was born on December 22, , in São Sebastião, São Paulo, Brazil.
He is the son of Claudio de Jesus Ferreira and Simone Medina.
Gabriel started surfing when he was only eight years old after his parents divorced.
As a result, he was raised by his mother and stepfather, Charles Serrano de Saldanha Rodrigues, also known as "Charlão."
Gabriel has a brother, Felipe Medina, and a half-sister, Sophia Rodrigues.
"Charlão" has always been Gabriel's mentor, coach, and videographer. In

A wild Malibu romp with Cousin Pete, Steven, and our hero, the surf journalist maestro Jamie Brisick.
“Buckin’ Broncos” is the happy byproduct of about two decades of memoir/personal essay writing that started over a lunch with my then-agent who asked about my surfing life. I elaborated, and at the end of my rant he said, “You know, you should really write a memoir, a surf-family memoir.” So I went home, rolled one of the spliffs that I smoked every evening at that time, and began writing what for many years I framed as my failed memoir, but now just think of as my daily self-examination/check-in/interrogation.
Which is to say that the memoir in its completed form has yet to be published. But as the brilliant writer John Jeremiah Sullivan once wrote (I’m paraphrasing), ‘There’s no such thing as wasted writing.’ Or the artist Paul Chan, who I interviewed in , told me, “I’m starting to see how success is its own form of failure.”
Or as Bob Dylan sings in “Love Minus Zero”: She knows there’s no success li

He llegado a mi límite.
